Born in Oliver, Robert Gillen earned his law degree from the University of British Columbia in 1973 and had his own law practice when he joined the Crown in 1979 as a Provincial Court prosecutor. Throughout his 29 years as a public servant, he prosecuted in Surrey, New Westminster and Vancouver at the Provincial, County, Supreme Court and Court of Appeal levels.
He was appointed Administrative Crown counsel for Port Coquitlam in 1984, Deputy Regional Crown counsel for the South Fraser region in 1986, Regional Crown counsel for Vancouver Island in 1988 and Assistant Deputy Attorney General in 2001.
He was appointed Queen’s counsel in 2000.
