JUSTIN

Benefits of JUSTIN

JUSTIN provides many benefits for all justice agencies, which in turn will benefit the public. Key benefits include:

Increased public safety
  • Police have immediate access to the complete criminal history on an accused, as well as to information on warrants issued or cancelled, protection orders, firearms prohibition orders, high-risk offender indicators, bail and probation orders, and disposition of cases.
Support for victims of crime legislation
  • JUSTIN supports police and Crown in meeting Victims of Crime Act requirements by consolidating and providing access to all information about cases (e.g., trial dates, release dates and locations, court orders).
Better information quality
  • Crown counsel can make better charge approval decisions, as they are able to see work that is pending in another Crown office. Crown counsel can also see information regarding files that have been waived to other courts, or that have been ordered to stand trial in the Supreme Court.
  • JUSTIN generates customized reports to provide local managers and administrators with accurate statistics about local cases and case volumes.
  • There is immediate access to information with respect to bail hearings and dispositions.
  • JUSTIN provides information on line - the Accused File History report, case results, alternate measures details and next appearances.
Reduced costs
  • Police overtime costs are reduced through more accurate trial scheduling.
  • Maintaining and updating a single, province-wide system instead of many separate systems will reduce costs and duplication of effort.
  • Data is entered into the system only once, and is then available to all authorized users. This reduces errors and duplication of effort.
  • Electronic file transfer between agencies saves time and paper and reduces costs.
Enforcement of legal rules
  • JUSTIN will not allow the user to include summary and indictable offences on the same Information
  • JUSTIN contains a table of the start and finish dates for legislation. Where historical offences are charged, JUSTIN ensures that the respective legislation was in force at the time of the offence.
  • JUSTIN determines the type of information that can be entered for young persons, depending on their age and criminal charges.
Improved court scheduling
  • Police are able to indicate dates when they are not available for court because of shift assignments, training, other court commitments or vacations, which allows trial schedulers to set trial times more accurately. This reduces or eliminates overtime costs for police detachments, avoids scheduling police officers for court in more than one location or court at a time, and reduces the number of adjournments at the last minute because of unavailability of police witnesses.
  • Police receive earlier notice of a required court appearance, allowing them to do staff assignments with greater certainty and ensure adequate staffing levels.
  • In consultation with trial schedulers, administrative judges are able to view all trials set in order to schedule judges according to need at a specific time.
  • Court scheduling information will be immediately available to all users.
Enhanced document production
  • JUSTIN automatically produces documents such as the Report to Crown Counsel, notification letters, caution letters, diversion forms, informations, indictments, warrants and summonses-with a minimum of data entry effort, with increased accuracy, and with standardization of document formats.
High Risk Offender Indicator:
  • JUSTIN maintains the names of all high-risk offenders in the Province. This supports the reporting of RCCs of high-risk offenders to the High Risk Offenders Program.
Security & Audit Trails:
  • JUSTIN keeps track of each addition, change and deletion of data, including date, time and user.
Protection Order Registry and Firearms Prohibition Registry:
  • JUSTIN provides a report of all protection orders and Firearm Prohibition Orders made by the Court. The orders prepared by JUSTIN flag the appropriate order(s) required by the Protection Order Registry.
  • JUSTIN will provide quicker access to accurate information about no contact, no-go, and firearms prohibition order made by the court once they can be sent electronically.
Standard management information:
  • Once fully implemented, JUSTIN will provide consistent management information in many areas for the Judiciary.
  • Management information will be available for extraction as soon as the data entry is complete.
