Family Justice Services Centre
In 2007, Nanaimo was designated as a Family Justice Registry under Rule 5 of the new Provincial Court (Family) Rules. At the same time, the Nanaimo Family Justice Services Centre was opened as a pilot project. The project was led by the Family Justice Services Division of the Ministry of Attorney General in partnership with the Legal Services Society.
The Nanaimo Family Justice Services Centre was created in response to recommendations of the Family Justice Reform Working Group (FJRWG) to the Justice Review Task Force in May 2005. The FJRWG recommended that the justice system move toward actively encouraging cooperative approaches to solving family law disputes and create centres to help accomplish this goal.
In October 2008, the Nanaimo Family Justice Services Centre was expanded to include civil justice services and is now known as the Nanaimo Justice Access Centre. A second justice access centre opened in Vancouver in 2010.
