In May 2005, the Family Justice Reform Working Group (FJRWG) recommended the justice system actively encourage cooperative approaches to solving family law disputes and that it create centres to help accomplish this goal.
In response to this recommendation, the Ministry of Attorney General and the Legal Services Society (LSS) opened the Nanaimo Family Justice Services Centre as a pilot project in 2007.
An evaluation of the pilot project’s implementation phase of April through November 2007 was carried out by Focus Consultants for the ministry and LSS. The evaluation report is available below, along with a background document outlining the family justice services available in Nanaimo before and after the creation of the centre, and an addendum to the report identifying opportunities for the centre’s growth after the implementation phase.
In October 2008, the Nanaimo Family Justice Services Centre was expanded to include civil justice services and is now known as the Justice Access Centre. More information is available at www.justiceaccesscentre.bc.ca/.
