The Best Option for You
If You Go to Supreme Court
What should I do on the day of my Judicial Case Conference or trial?
On the day of your conference or trial:
- Make sure you have all the documents you need in one neat folder or envelope. This includes all the documents you and your spouse filed with the court registry, your Case Management Plan Worksheet if you are going to a Judicial Case Conference, and any relevant financial documents if you will be discussing support or division of property.
- Dress neatly.
- Bring a paper and pen, so you can jot down questions as they occur to you. Remember, too, that you (or the Defendant) will be responsible for preparing any order the judge may decide to make, to file with the court registry later on. You will need to take careful notes.
- Bring a calendar or appointment diary to record the dates of any future court appearances or meetings.
- Arrive early - at least 15 minutes before your conference or trial is scheduled to start.
- Find out which room your conference or trial will be held in, then wait outside the door. (To find your room check the daily list posted in the lobby of the courthouse, at the information desk - if there is one - or at the court registry office.)
- Turn off your cell phone or beeper, take off your hat (if you are wearing one), put out your cigarette, and throw away any chewing gum before you enter the conference room or courtroom.
- Once in the conference room or courtroom, address a female judge as "My Lady," a male judge as "My Lord" and a master as "Your Honour."
Important!
If you are not comfortable speaking in English, or you communicate only in sign language, ask court staff to arrange for an interpreter well in advance of your conference or trial date.
