Getting Legal Advice

How can I find a lawyer?

If you don't already know a lawyer, a personal recommendation is a good place to start. Ask your friends or other people you trust if they know a family law lawyer they would recommend.

If you can't find a lawyer that way, talk to the Lawyer Referral Service. They will provide you with the name of a family law lawyer in your community who will give you 30-minute consultation for $25. You can then decide if you want to hire that lawyer. In Greater Vancouver, call 604-687-3221. Elsewhere in BC, call toll-free 1-800-663-1919.

The Legal Services Society will appoint a lawyer for you if you are financially eligible and your legal problem is covered under legal aid rules. You can obtain more information by contacting the Legal Services Society directly.

If you live in Greater Victoria, try The Law Centre. Operated by The Law Centre Association of Victoria, the Legal Services Society of BC and the University of Victoria's Faculty of Law, the Law Centre provides legal education, legal advice and guidance, and representation in court for people who qualify for Legal Aid.

If you are interested in collaborative law, the Collaborative Divorce BC web site includes a page listing some of the lawyers in BC who practice collaborative law, along with their e-mail addresses.
