Separation and Divorce

Do I need a lawyer to get a divorce?

You do not need a lawyer to get a divorce. Most book or stationary stores carry guides that provide set-by-step instructions on how to complete a do-it-yourself divorce. Court registries do not supply them.

If your divorce is uncontested - you both agree to the divorce - you may also want to look at the Legal Services Society's on-line divorce self-help kit or the booklet (also available on-line) called Do-It-Yourself Divorce in B.C.

However, we do recommend that you seek legal advice about getting a divorce, especially if you need to settle issues in addition to the divorce, such as custody, guardianship, access and support, and the division of property. Please see our web site section called If You Go to Supreme Court for information about applying for a court order.
