Child Support
When did the guidelines come into effect? What if my order or agreement was made before that?
For child support orders made as part of a divorce under the Divorce Act, the child support guidelines came into effect May 1, 1997. For child support orders made under the Family Relations Act, the guidelines came into effect April 14, 1998.
If you have a child support order or agreement made before the child support guidelines came into effect, you may choose to let it stay the way it is now, or you may decide to change it. We recommend that you get legal advice about the tax and other financial consequences of deciding either way.
