Do I have to take Parenting After Separation?

Participation in a Parenting After Separation session is required in Abbotsford, Campbell River, Chilliwack, Courtney, Kamloops, Kelowna, Nanaimo, New Westminster, North Vancouver, Penticton, Port Coquitlam, Prince George, Richmond, Surrey, Vancouver, Vernon and Victoria  before you can go to the Provincial Court to obtain or change a child support, custody, guardianship or access order. Court staff will schedule a Provincial Court appearance only after you or your former spouse have filed a certificate of attendance or you receive an official exemption.

Exemptions are automatic in some cases - you have attended a Parenting After Separation session within the past two years, for example, or you and your spouse are filing a consent order.

You may also receive an exemption if:

  • your safety or the safety of your children is at risk;
  • you have also applied for a protection order; or
  • you have a serious health problem or you live a long way from the court registry where you filed your application and it would be difficult for you to attend a Parenting After Separation session.
Exemption forms and additional information are available from your local Provincial Court or Family Justice Centre location.
