Dispute Resolution Office

The Ministry of Justice's Dispute Resolution Office develops and implements dispute resolution services and justice transformation projects with administrative tribunals, courts, and government ministries and agencies. The DRO’s objective is to foster transformational change in the justice system, with a particular focus on enhancing access to justice, as well as cutting cost, complexity and delay. Initiatives of the Dispute Resolution Office are guided by the ministry's alternative dispute resolution policy and include:

• developing and implementing mediation options such as the Court Mediation Program for small claims in Provincial Court and the Notice to Mediate process in Supreme Court;
• designing early settlement opportunities for family cases in Provincial Court, such as the Child Protection Mediation Program and the requirement for people to attend a Parenting After Separation session before appearing in court;
• developing effective Public Legal Education and Information (PLEI) programs to help British Columbians understand their options for resolving disputes early and for accessing the justice system;
• supporting the development of human rights law in British Columbia through amendments to the Human Rights Code and reports on British Columbia’s international human rights obligations;
• leading transformation projects in the administrative justice system, such as the development and implementation of the Civil Resolution Tribunal Act.
