Ministry of Attorney General

B.C.'s Prosecution Service

B.C.'s Prosecution Service provides prosecutorial services throughout the province. Students on a rotation with the Criminal Justice branch work directly with Crown counsel.

Articling students in B.C.'s Prosecution Service rotation might be asked to:

  • assist Crown counsel at a local office by interviewing witnesses, advising on points of law, conducting minor prosecutions and generally helping prepare cases for trial or disposition in Provincial and Supreme courts;
  • help provide legal opinions and drafting factums under the supervision of deputy regional Crown counsel and appellate trial counsel in the Court of Appeal; and
  • assist Crown counsel working at the Criminal Justice branch headquarters on criminal and quasi-criminal matters of provincewide effect, such as the implementation of new legislation, the development of practice and procedural advice to Crown counsel and legal advice to other government agencies.

What Former Students Say About Their Rotations With Crown counsel

"I feel that the Crown rotation is one area that sets articles with the Ministry apart from other articles. During my two month Crown rotation I was exposed to a variety of experiences that allowed me to develop my advocacy and interviewing skills. I was also involved with accused and witnesses on a daily basis and I was often the one making decisions that impacted their lives.
