Ministry of Attorney General

Civil Litigation

The Civil Litigation Group:

  • conducts all civil litigation involving the government, including:
    • appearing on behalf of the government;
    • retaining and instructing experts in a wide variety of areas as part of the trial process;
  • interviews witnesses and conducts discoveries;
  • advises on the likely outcome of civil litigation involving the government;
  • counsels the Risk Management Branch of the Ministry of Finance and the government's insurance and claims offices; and
  • represents government at administrative tribunals and Small Claims Court.

A student on rotation with the Civil Litigation Group might draft pleadings or factums, and attend discoveries, settlement conferences and hearings before the Supreme Court of British Columbia, the Court of Appeal and administrative tribunals. Each student is also responsible for a Small Claims file during their articles.
