How do I find a mediator? How much will it cost?

Where to look

Private mediators are available in most communities in British Columbia. Contact the Mediate BC Society (formerly known as Mediator Roster Society) for a list of qualified mediators, or look in the yellow pages of your local telephone book under "Mediators."

A family justice counsellor may also be able to help you with mediation services. Some lawyers, too, practice mediation. See our section on Getting Legal Advice.

What to ask

The Ministry of Justice's Dispute Resolution Office has published an information bulletin on Selecting a Mediator that includes a list of key questions to ask any mediator you are thinking of hiring.

Cost

Family justice counsellors are free; however, they work primarily with separating and divorcing parents of modest means.

Costs for other mediators will vary, depending on who the mediator is and how long the mediation takes. In general, the cost of a successful mediation will be less than the cost of going to court.
