I need an interpreter for my court hearing. What should I do?

If you have to go to either the Provincial or Supreme Court as part of your separation or divorce, but you need help with the English language or you communicate only in sign language, the court will provide you with an interpreter.

The interpreter will be with you throughout any court hearings to interpret for you, so that you will understand what is going on in court and the judge and other participants will understand your testimony. You should ask court staff to arrange for an interpreter at the same time as you file your application for a court order.

(For more information on applying for a custody, guardianship or access or support order, please see our web site sections called If You Go to Provincial Court and If You Go to Supreme Court.)

If you forget to do it then, let court staff know as soon possible to make sure they have enough time to find a suitable interpreter in your area. If an interpreter is not arranged in time, the judge may have to re-schedule your case.
