What if a payor can't or won't pay?

If someone has a court order or agreement that requires the person to pay family support, then he or she must pay it. It is a legal obligation.

Family support payments are obligations that, just like credit card charges, a car loan or a mortgage, must be paid. In fact, under BC law, maintenance will usually take priority over other debts.

It is the FMEP's responsibility to monitor the maintenance orders and agreements enrolled with it and to take enforcement action when necessary.
